Sierra Mar Vineyard

Far south of Rosella's lies Gary Franscioni's Sierra Mar Vineyard, which he planted to Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah and Viognier in 2007.  With its soil composition of decomposed granite mixed with gravelly loam, it is quite different than the Arroyo Seco sandy loam found at Rosella's.

August West started producing Sierra Mar Pinot Noir in 2010 using all Swiss clone 23, also known as Mariafeld.  In 2011, we added the Swan selection of Pinot Noir to our Sierra Mar blend.  Gary also planted other Pinot clones at his new site including 943, Pommard and the Pisoni selection.

Sierra Mar sits high above the Salinas Valley at 1,000 feet in elevation.  Combining this with its southern location in the Santa Lucia Highlands means that Sierra Mar sees more sunshine and less fog than most of the appellation.  This could mean we'll expect earlier ripeness at Sierra Mar, but each vintage is different, so we shall see as the vineyard matures.
