The first August West vineyard designate Pinot Noir from the Peterson Vineyard comes from the prolific growing year of 2012.  August West partner, John Peterson, bought this 9 acre parcel in early 2010.  It is on the east side of River Road between Rosella’s and Garys’ Vineyards, just north of the town of Soledad.  The upper part of the vineyard is planted to clones 828, 667 and Pommard, while the lower part contains a bit more Pommard, 115 and 777.  Some of the Peterson fruit went into our 2011 Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir, but this is the first time we’re putting Peterson on the label.

Peterson typically is a very fragrant, light to medium-bodied Pinot Noir, and the 2012 keeps that tradition going.  Ruby and very clear to the eye, our ’12 Peterson gives the impression of the cool SLH summers in the nose with its black cherry, heirloom tomato and roasted coffee nose.  The mouthfeel is soft at first, then instantly fills the palate with deep berry flavors and a moderate to high acid finish.  It’s drinking well already, but should be at its best between 2015 and 2020.
