2013 will be regarded as one of the best vintages in California history, and the Santa Lucia Highlands certainly enjoyed an excellent year.  The young Sierra Mar Vineyard sits high above the rest of the Santa Lucia Highlands appellation, and is planted to various clones of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah and Viognier.  We received two clones of Pinot for this wine, the Swiss clone 23, (a.k.a. Mariafeld) and Swan.

We fermented the Swan fully destemmed, while half of the clone 23 was fermented using the whole cluster technique.  It's a traditional way to make Pinot Noir, and it adds a lot of tannin to the resulting wine.  2013 was such a ripe vintage, there is an abundance of fruit that can stand up to these tannins, similar to our 2012 Sierra Mar Pinot.  The 2013 is even more fruit forward than the 2012.  We predict the drinking window for this '13 Sierra Mar to start by the end of 2015 and last through 2024.
