2003 Rosella's Vineyard Pinot Noir
The 2003 August West Rosella's Vineyard Pinot Noir is the second wine we ever produced, and it was the last vintage in which we produced only one wine. In retrospect, 2003 was the last growing season that Ed Kurtzman considers a "normal" year, through 2011. The three tons of Pisoni selection Pinot we got from Rosella's came in perfectly ripe and in great shape. It was the first of four vintages we produced at the Freeman Winery in Sebastopol, California.
Having tasted the '03 Rosella's in March 2012, Ed is convinced this is meant for further aging, at least through 2018. The wine still requires a good decanting to open up and reveal its Santa Lucia Highlands fruit and spiciness.
